Some horror stories begin in abandoned houses, dark forests, or lonely graveyards. But this real horror story began in a small hotel room on the outskirts of a city in North India.
In 2022, I had to travel alone for work and booked a small hotel for one night. The hotel wasn’t luxurious, but it was clean, affordable, and close to my meeting location. I arrived around 10:30 PM and was given Room 307.
At first, everything seemed completely normal.
But within a few hours, I experienced something I still cannot explain.
The Strange Room Number

When I walked toward my room, I noticed something unusual.
The rooms were numbered:
303 → 304 → 305 → 307
There was no Room 306.
I assumed it was probably being renovated or wasn’t available to guests. I didn’t give it much thought and entered Room 307.
The room looked ordinary. There was a bed, television, desk, bathroom, and a large mirror facing the bed.
After having dinner, I watched television for a while and eventually went to sleep.
Three Knocks at 2:17 AM

At exactly 2:17 AM, I suddenly woke up.
Someone was knocking on my door.
Three slow knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
I looked at my phone. It was exactly 2:17 AM.
Thinking it was another hotel guest, I got out of bed and looked through the peephole.
Nobody was standing outside.
The corridor was empty.
I waited for a few seconds before returning to bed.
Then it happened again.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
This time, the sound was louder.
I looked through the peephole again.
There was still nobody there.
Then I heard a woman’s voice.
“Please open the door.”
I froze.
The voice came again.
“Please.”
I immediately called the hotel reception.
The receptionist answered surprisingly quickly.
I told him someone was knocking on my door.
He asked, “Which room?”
“307,” I replied.
There was a long silence.
Then he said something that made the situation much more frightening.
“Sir, please don’t open the door.”
There Is No Room 306

A few minutes later, the receptionist came upstairs.
I opened the door slightly and asked him what was happening.
He looked nervous.
I asked him whether someone had been walking around the corridor.
Instead of answering, he asked me a question.
“Did you hear a woman’s voice?”
I said yes.
He looked toward the end of the hallway and then quietly told me something strange.
There was no Room 306.
Not because it was closed.
According to him, the hotel had never had a Room 306.
The building’s original layout went directly from Room 305 to Room 307.
I asked him why someone was knocking on my door.
He said he didn’t know.
Before leaving, he gave me one warning:
“Lock your door and don’t open it if you hear anything else.”
At that point, I started wondering whether I had accidentally checked into a room with a disturbing history.
The Mirror Made Everything Worse

After the receptionist left, I locked the door and tried to sleep.
But something kept bothering me—the large mirror facing my bed.
I looked into it.
My reflection was sitting exactly where I was sitting.
Everything seemed normal.
Then I noticed the bathroom.
In the mirror, the bathroom door behind me was open.
I immediately turned around.
The bathroom door was closed.
I looked back at the mirror.
The door was still open in the reflection.
For several seconds, I couldn’t move.
Then, slowly, the bathroom door in the reflection began to close.
I turned on every light in the room.
I didn’t sleep after that.
The Mysterious Wi-Fi Network

At approximately 3:04 AM, my phone vibrated.
A Wi-Fi notification appeared on my screen.
My phone had detected a network named:
ROOM_306
I checked the available Wi-Fi networks.
There was no Room 306.
Only the hotel’s main Wi-Fi network was visible.
A few seconds later, another notification appeared.
It read:
“Door unlocked.”
I immediately checked my hotel door.
The lock was still engaged.
Then the handle began moving.
Slowly.
Someone was trying to open the door.
I stepped away from the entrance and grabbed my phone.
The handle stopped.
Then came three more knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
A woman’s voice whispered from the other side:
“You are in my room.”
I couldn’t move.
What Happened in the Morning?

At around 6:30 AM, I finally left the room.
I went directly to reception and asked to speak with the manager.
When he saw me, he immediately asked:
“Did you stay in Room 307?”
I said yes.
Then he asked whether anything unusual had happened during the night.
I told him everything.
Instead of looking surprised, he became quiet.
The manager eventually showed me an old floor plan of the hotel.
There were Rooms 303, 304, 305 and 307.
There was no 306.
He explained that the building had been renovated several years earlier. Before the renovation, the layout had apparently been different, and a small room had existed in that section of the building.
According to him, a female employee had died there following an accident.
The room was later removed during renovations.
The manager insisted that there was no official explanation for what I experienced.
But his next words stayed with me.
He said that some guests who stayed in Room 307 had previously complained about hearing knocking during the night.
The Photograph I Never Took

I thought the incident was finally over.
Several weeks later, while going through my phone gallery, I discovered something that made the entire experience even more disturbing.
There was a photograph of the hotel corridor.
I didn’t remember taking it.
Room 307 was visible at the end of the hallway.
But beside it was another door.
The number was clearly visible.
306.
I checked the photograph’s timestamp.
It had been taken at:
2:17 AM.
The exact time I first heard the knocking.
I still don’t know how the photograph got onto my phone.
I never returned to that hotel.
Even today, whenever I stay somewhere unfamiliar, I check the room numbers carefully.
Because the most frightening part of this real horror story wasn’t discovering that Room 306 didn’t exist.
It was realizing that something that shouldn’t have existed knew I was inside.
